பாரிலேயும் நாம சங்கீர்த்தனம் செய்ய;
இயேசு நாதர் நம்மையும் தாங்குவார்;
பாவம் போக்கப் பாரினில் ஜென்மித்தார்;
விண்ணும் மண்ணும் இசைந்து பாடவும்;
ஆட்சிசெய்வார் நித்திய காலமும்;
இயேசு ஸ்வாமி, பூமியில் ஆளுமேன்;
Safe in the Arms of Jesus
Fanny யை Queen of Gospel Song Writer என்றும் Mother of modern congregational singing in America என்றும் பாராட்டப்படுகிறார்.

*The Story behind the Hymn*
Fanny Jane Crosby, the daughter of John and Mercy Crosby, was born in Southeast, Putnam County, N. Y., March 24, 1820. At six weeks old, Crosby caught a cold and developed inflammation of the eyes. Mustard poultices were applied to treat the discharges. This procedure damaged her optic nerves and blinded her. She was totally blind, having lost her sight through a tragic doctor’s error.
Her father died in November 1820 when Fanny was only six months old, so she was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother. When she was eight years old she moved with her family to Ridgefield, Connecticut, where they stayed for four years.
These women grounded her in Christian principles, helping her memorize long passages from the Bible, and she became an active member of the John Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Manhattan.
Crosby memorized five chapters of the Bible each week from age 10, with the encouragement of her grandmother and later Mrs. Hawley; by age 15, she had memorized the four gospels, the Pentateuch, the Book of Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and many of the Psalms.
At the age of fifteen, she enrolled the New York Institution for the Blind, where she obtained a great education. She learned to play the piano, organ, harp, and guitar, and became a good soprano singer. She became a teacher at the school in 1847 and resumed her work until March 1858. She taught English grammar, rhetoric and American history.
Fanny was a wonderful personality; she rose from all odds to make history as a poetess and a prolific writer. Fanny was married March 5, 1858, to Alex. Van Alstyne, who was also blind but a scholar in the same institution in which she was educated.
In 1859, they had a daughter named Frances who died in her sleep soon after birth. Crosby's hymn "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" was inspired by her death. Van and Fanny organized concerts with half the proceeds given to aid the poor, in which she gave recitations of her poems and sang, and he played various instruments.
Yet Fanny Crosby did not begin writing hymns until the age of forty-four. She then started to write Sunday-school hymns. “Praise Him! Praise Him!” first appeared in a Sunday school hymnal, Bright Jewels, published in 1869. In this hymn, Fanny Crosby urges us to praise God for His “excellent goodness”. The song may have been written in a time when her heart was full of praise for her saviour. This hymn celebrates Jesus as our "blessed Redeemer" and praises his amazing gifts of salvation and redemption.
It’s hard to find a hymn more filled with praise and joy. Jesus is hailed as Rock, Redeemer, Prophet, Priest, and King. But, just when we think He is so “excellent” that He is out of reach, we see Him as a Shepherd, carrying His little ones in His arms.
Fanny actually praised God for her blindness. She said, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were there,I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God as I might have been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.” It is one of the most popular hymns in English-speaking denominations.
Fanny was active in speaking engagements and missionary work among America's urban poor almost until she died. Her husband "Van" died on July 18, 1902. Crosby died on February 12, 1915 at the age of 94.
Fanny Crosby has written more than 8000 hymns, songs and poems than anyone else since the beginning of the Christian era! Crosby was known as the "Queen of Gospel Song Writers" and as the "Mother of modern congregational singing in America", with most American hymnals containing her work.
☸️. The apostle Paul wrote of singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, thus recognizing that followers of Jesus can worship God with various musical tastes. These hymns will no doubt have a profound effect on our spiritual lives.
