(1669-1742)*
Daughters of the Church:
Susanna Wesley
(1669-1742)
Early Life:
Susanna Annesley was born in London, England, 20 January 1669. She was the daughter of the prominent, highly educated Anglican priest Dr. Samuel Annesley and Mary White. Susanna was the youngest in a family of 25 children. Susanna learned Greek, Latin, French, logic and metaphysics and was deeply interested in the religious discussions of the day.
Susanna’s Marriage:
During her childhood, Susanna’s household enjoyed frequent visits from some of the leading dissenting theologians of the day: Thomas Manton, Richard Baxter and John Owen were some of the best-known. Susanna was educated at home, with her lessons supplemented by the intellectual atmosphere of her father’s many scholarly visitors. One of these was the son of a Dissenting minister, Samuel Wesley, then a student. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1689 and he and Susanna, who had also decided to affiliate with the Anglican Church, were married soon after when she was 20 and he was 28.
Family Life:
Susanna took her relationship to God as seriously as she did her duties as a wife and mother. Even amid the most complex and busy years of her life as a mother, she still scheduled two hours each day for fellowship with God and time in His Word, and she adhered to that schedule faithfully.
Their first year was spent in a boarding house – to give birth to their first child she went back to her parents’ gracious home for cleanliness, privacy and comfort. And babies arrived frequently – like her mother, Susanna and Samuel Wesley had 19 children. Nine of her children died as infants. Four of the children who died were twins. Another was accidentally smothered in the night by a nurse as Susanna recovered from labor and delivery.
Susanna instructed them in the basics of the faith, taught them to read and reason, and to live out a “practical divinity.” She encouraged them in self-examination, prayer, and charity.
Ministry of Samuel:
Following his ordination and marriage, Samuel’s parochial ministry took him from London into Surrey, then on to Lincolnshire, where he was Rector of Epworth from 1697 until his death in 1735. Samuel did not succeed in his thirty-nine-year assignment as rector of the church at Epworth. An intellectual academic, he simply did not understand or identify with the rural villagers in his parish. Nor did they care for him.
When he involved himself from the pulpit in a highly divisive political matter inflaming the entire nation in that era, he earned the hatred of a vast segment of the populace. They had many challenges over the years, again occasionally caused by some parishioners’ opposition to Samuel as pastor. For decades, Samuel expended all of his energies and most of the family’s meager wealth working on an exegetical treatise on the book of Job.
The sad irony is that while he was away for long periods of time studying and writing about Job’s intense sufferings, his living, breathing wife was enduring real pain and hardship, largely on her own.
Marital Crisis:
Samuel and Susanna were both strong characters each with definite opinions and while they were devoted to each other there were occasions when they had marital difficulties. For example, one time royal politics entered their home life and caused a separation. Susanna was a strong supporter of the Stuart King James who had been overthrown in 1688 and replaced by William, his Dutch son-in-law.
In 1702 when in family prayers Samuel prayed for King William Susanna refused to say “Amen.” She was, as her son John described it later, “inflexible”, and Samuel was equally so. “Sukey,” he told her as he left home. “We must part for if we have two kings we must have two beds.” Susanna asserted that she would apologize if she was wrong but she felt to do so for expediency only would be a lie and thus a sin. Tension ensued.
Samuel left for London as a Convocation proctor for a year. He returned in 1702 when Queen Anne, whom they both acknowledged as the legitimate sovereign, came to the throne. Eventually after five months and the death of King William, Samuel returned home and from their reconciliation was born John in 1703.
Life Struggles:
In 1704 a fire broke out in the Epworth rectory, where Susanna staggered to safety through the front door while several of her children clambered out of a window to the sanctuary of the garden. A maid brought out the baby. But John was missing; his cries could be heard from an upstairs bedroom but later he was rescued.
In 1705 when they disagreed with Samuel’s political choices a group of villagers harangued the parsonage all night in Samuel’s absence – shouting, drumming and firing guns and with Susanna just recovering from the birth of her sixteenth child. Unfortunately, the baby’s nurse was so exhausted after all the commotion she lapsed into a deep sleep and rolled over on the baby smothering it.
On February 9, 1709 the Epworth rectory caught on fire for the second time and though John later considered it set by vindictive neighbors it could well has been accidental. With their home in flames the family scrambled to safety including Susanna who was expecting what would be her last child. However, when the family assembled they were missing one – six year old John. Then after they spotted him standing in a window, a neighbor lifted another man to his shoulders so the second man could snatch little John to safety just seconds before the roof fell in. John saw his deliverance as God’s work and for many years referred to him as a literal “brand snatched from the burning.” Yet though the family was safe they realized the fire had destroyed not just the house but also all the contents including family papers and Samuel’s library. The rectory was rebuilt but while it was under construction the family was separated by staying with various relatives.
Another time a parishioner demanded immediate payment of a debt that Samuel could not pay so he had the pastor imprisoned. At home Susanna struggled to manage on a reduced budget while Samuel became self-appointed pastor to his fellow prisoners. The church eventually paid the debt and Samuel returned home.
Ministry of Susanna:
Samuel was attending a long church conference leaving his pulpit in charge of another minister, a Mr. Inman. However, the man proved a poor choice since his almost constant sermon topic was paying one’s debts when he owed many. Some saw this as a slap at Samuel.
Since there were no afternoon church services, Susanna began an evening family gathering where they sang psalms, prayed and Susanna read a short sermon from her husband’s library. It began with the family and the servants but soon word spread and others neighbors appeared, and soon there were too many for the parsonage. Susanna had written her husband of what she was doing, but then in his own letter when he perhaps saw the services as competition, Mr. Inman complained to Samuel. His claim to Samuel was that such irregular services could cause criticism or even scandal for the church.
Finally Samuel told Susanna to discontinue the meetings. However, she declined as she described how the meetings were a genuine and effective ministry to those who attended and that Mr. Inman was about the only one who‘d objected. The services continued.
Kitchen Prayer:
When husband Samuel was away, as was often the case, a substitute minister brought the Sunday morning sermon at the church. Susanna found these messages uninspiring and lacking in spiritual meat. The lack of diverse spiritual teaching caused Susanna to assemble her children Sunday afternoon for family services. Susanna began to hold service every Sunday evening in the rectory kitchen for the benefit of her children and servants.
They would sing a psalm and then Susanna would read a sermon from either her husband's or father's sermon file followed by another psalm. Susanna Wesley served as a spiritual guide to her family, adhering to a daily method of Bible reading, prayer, sacrament, fasting, and Sabbath meditation. Soon neighbors began asking if they could attend. Word of mouth spread, others asked permission to come. At one point there were over 200 people who would attend Susanna’s Sunday afternoon service while the Sunday morning service dwindled to nearly nothing.
Though Samuel protested on his return that it was unseemly for a woman to hold prayers, Susanna continued this practice for years in spite of hearty opposition. Susanna’s influence went far beyond her family and that home. People referred to her as a preacher of righteousness. Many historians contend that the "kitchen prayers" were the seed of the Methodist movement.
Works of Susanna:
Susanna Wesley wrote meditations and scriptural commentaries for her own use. She wrote extended commentaries on the Apostles Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments and Scriptural support for doctrines of the faith. Susanna wrote expositions on theological texts for her children and, when they were away, engaged in regular letter writing that mainly focused on theological discourse. She was given a remarkable mind, the ability to write and reason, bright children, teaching gifts, a pious upbringing, a challenging marriage, and ultimately a fulfilling death. She worked tirelessly and without much assistance from her husband, who was often absent.
Death of Susanna:
As his health slowly failed, Samuel continued to work on his lifelong project – a book called “Dissertations on the Book of Job.” Though Samuel hoped its publication would assure his family’s financial security it did not prove so. Written in Latin, the ponderous and scholarly account did not appeal to the average reader. Samuel could possibly have been more successful by writing shorter and more popular pieces, but he preferred to devote his talents to what he considered a high level of scholarship.
After Samuel passed away on April 5, 1735 when John had paid his debts Susanna had very little. For the rest of her life she would depend on her children. After Samuel death, Susanna continued her ways until her own death in 1742 at the age of seventy-three, living long enough to see her sons John and Charles become world-renowned leaders of the global Christian movement.
Mother of Methodism:
Susanna never preached a sermon, published a book, or founded a church, yet Susanna Wesley is known as the Mother of Methodism in a religious and moral sense, for, her courage, her submissiveness to authority, the high tone of her mind, its independence and its self-control, the warmth of her devotional feelings, and the practical directions given to them, … were visibly repeated in the character and conduct of her two sons, John Wesley and Charles Wesley who would grow up to shape the course of Christian history and thus change the world. It is generally agreed that without the example set by Susanna Wesley, her sons would have not had the impenetrable hides needed for reforming.
Indeed, a great legacy from a woman who expressed a simple desire: “I am content to fill a little space if God be glorified.” Yes, Susanna was one of those Christians with strong characters whose many qualities God uses for His good purposes. There is no doubt that, despite terribly difficult circumstances, she maintained a well-ordered household where her children learned good habits of self-discipline and perseverance.
Methodist Movement:
An English mother of John and Charles Wesley whose "kitchen prayers" were thought to be the seed of the Methodist movement, the example of faith and religious reverence she set for her children John and Charles inspired them to become powerful spiritual leaders, and to launch the Methodist movement.
John Wesley is estimated to have preached to nearly a million people in his long, fruitful life. His powerful, evangelistic services were frequently held in the open air to accommodate audiences in the tens of thousands. Traveling on horseback, he regularly preached three or more times a day, often beginning before daybreak. Even at the age of seventy he preached, without the assistance of modern amplification, to an estimated throng of thirty-two thousand people.
John’s younger brother Charles was very much a partner in and vital contributor to these accomplishments. A brilliant musician and lyricist, he wrote more than 6,600 hymns, many of which are still in hymnals the world over today.
Dear beloved readers, as you know that when Jesus was hanging on the Cross, all the male disciples left Him alone and only the women were under the Cross. Because of this the resurrected Jesus Christ, revealed Himself first to the woman and through her the mesaage of resurrected Christ passed on to men and others. Jesus first revealed Himself as Messiah to the woman. In the early church for a first 500 years of the history of Christianity, many women served as theologians, evangelists, apostles, prophetess, deaconess, presbyters and Bishops. The women made the local Christianity into an international level. So the role of women is highly regarded in the early church.
When Christianity become the official religion of the Roman empire in the 5th century, the male dominated Roman culture influenced Christianity. Through the misinterpretations of 1 Cor 14:34-36, 1 Tim 2:11-15, 1 Cor 11:3, Eph 5:22-24, the male dominated Church leaders silenced the voices of women in the Church for the past 1500 years.
We are living in the 21st Century and the things are rapidly changing, but the church leaders stereotyped women and hesitated to ordain them as Deacons, Presbyters and Bishops. God created men and women in His own Image and the Church leaders fail to accept this reality and it is totally against God's plan in salvation History.
As we are living in India, we have 1,12,345 churches out of 6,75,982 villeges. Until and unless you rise as Deborah, as a mother of India, the villagers will be ceased. Jesus gave His life for the empowerment of women. So take this as a challege and do some thing for the extension of His Kingdom wherever you are. The Church may not recognize you but remember that the building is not the church but it is the fellowship of believers. So let your home be a place for your church, you can share about Jesus among your friends in schools, colleges and universities. You can share about Jesus in your work places among your friends. It is my prayer that you can be a channel of blessings to many others for His Glory. Amen.
